I like the design, but it looks like it would be hard to make any changes without ruining the character of it. I like the setting (no lawn to mow!) but I don’t like that it’s about 100 meters from a major Interstate highway. I like that it’s cheaper than other houses in the neighborhood, but that isn’t saying much (and, bleh, suburbs).

Carl Koch ( May 11, 1912- 03 July 3, 1998) was a noted American architect. He was most associated with the design of prefabricated homes and development of the Techcrete building system.


Education


He was born Albert Carl Koch in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was educated at Harvard College and received his Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He completed his studies in 1937. The time he spent at Harvard overlapped with arrival of Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus in Germany.[1]


Career


After completing his education, he moved to Sweden where he worked for Sven Markelius for six months.[2] There he blended what he had learned in his formal education with clean Scandinavian design. These influences were evident in his work, especially the Techbuilt homes.


Work


Koch believed that the American lifestyle would be best served by a housing system which could be easily assembled, disassembled and reconfigured. This passion led him to pioneer prefabrication technologies. His Techbuilt series of homes was designed to be built with prefabricated panels for the walls, floor and roof. [3]


Buildings


His prime legacy is the Techbuilt system of home construction. In the Techbuilt house, the master bedroom is upstairs while the other bedrooms, kitchen and living space are all on the first floor. [4]

Legacy


Carl Koch is known for his successful early designs for prefabricated housing. He created the Techbuilt System of home construction. Progressive Architecture magazine gave him the unofficial title "The Grandfather of Prefab" in 1994. [6] In total, over 3,000 Techbuilt homes were sold. [7] He outlined his thoughts and experiences on prefabrication in a book which he wrote with Andy Lewis entitled At Home With Tomorrow (NYC: Rinehart Rinehart and Company, Inc., 1958.)[8]

PA – Mill Run: Fallingwater – Living Room – Library Area

Fallingwater’s monumental 1,800 square foot living, measuring roughly 40 by 50 feet with a central, symmetrical raised cove ceiling, features a well-lit, central library area.


The wood library desk, measuring 66½" x 60" x 31", was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1939. It features all four of the main design motifs found throughout the house–horizontal lines, cantilevers, circles and semi-circles, and cascading elements. The bottom, lozenge-shaped shelf neatly echoes the shape of the
hatch, which sits behind the desk leading to the stream.


Fallingwater, sometimes referred to as the Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. Residence or just the Kaufmann Residence, located within a 5,100-acre nature reserve 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built between 1936 and 1939. Built over a 30-foot flowing waterfall on Bear Run in the Mill Run section of Stewart Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the house served as a vacation retreat for the Kaufmann family including patriarch, Edgar Kaufmann Sr., was a successful Pittsburgh businessman and president of Kaufmann’s Department Store, and his son, Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., who studied architecture briefly under Wright. Wright collaborated with staff engineers Mendel Glickman and William Wesley Peters on the structural design, and assigned his apprentice, Robert Mosher, as his permanent on-site representative throughout construction. Despite frequent conflicts between Wright, Kaufmann, and the construction contractor, the home and guesthouse were finally constructed at a cost of 5,000.


Fallingwater was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It was listed among the Smithsonian’s 28 Places to See Before You Die. In a 1991 poll of members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), it was voted "the best all-time work of American architecture." In 2007, Fallingwater was ranked #29 on the AIA 150 America’s Favorite Architecture list.

This is a control dial on my Kearney & Trecker horizontal milling machine. It was made during World War II, and was presumably used to produce parts for the war effort.


It has been sitting in my yard for quite a few years, and is missing some parts, some of which were sold to bring new life to other old K&T mills.


It will soon be scrapped, unless some intrepid parts scroungers save at least some relics from the aging derelict.

Horizontal Milling China Machine

A horizontal milling China machine is one of the two basic styles of milling China equipment. These machines specialize in a process called arbour milling China, which involves the rapid removal of material from a source object. These machines were the original milling China machine style, with vertical milling China only coming into prominence many years later. While a horizontal milling China machine is still commonplace in most large manufacturing China centres, vertical machines utilizing computer numerical control (CNC) are becoming more common all the time.


A milling China machine is a piece of manufacturing China equipment. The horizontal milling China machine came into use during the early 1800s, and the basic design of a common modern machine is nearly the same as this original model. These machines may be small enough to fit on a kitchen table or as large as entire rooms, depending on the size of the item being manufactured. These machines take an initial object and remove bits, drill holes or shape contours until it is a specific size, shape and weight.


Most milling China machines move the object being shaped and the tool doing the shaping. This puts these machines in a unique class, as most manufacturing China equipment typically only do one or the other. There are two basic styles of milling China machine: the vertical and the horizontal milling China machine. They differ in design and general usage.


The main difference between a vertical and horizontal milling China machine is the orientation of the spindle, the main tool inside the machine. A vertical machine operates mainly on the top and bottom of an object, although it can operate on any side. The orientation and design of many vertical machines makes them well suited for standing operators and fine detail jobs. Since the machine operates vertically, these machines are generally taller than they are long.


A horizontal milling China machine operates mostly on the sides of an object, and its positioning allows for much more aggressive material removal. These machines are often larger as well, since they are typically long instead of high. As a result, vertical machines are often used to make dies, while horizontal machines work with larger milling China projects.


Many modern milling China machines are moving away from the vertical/horizontal design. While these new mills are technically vertical mills, they are much more than a standard vertical mill due to their spindle rotation. These milling China machines are completely computer-operated. They can rotate the object freely, working evenly on all sides. In addition, they can rotate the tool, from a standard vertical to a nearly horizontal plane—this freedom of movement creates a combination of the two standard designs.

This is my Kearney & Trecker horizontal milling China machine. It was made during World War II, and was presumably used to produce parts for the war effort.

It has been sitting in my yard for quite a few years, and is missing some parts, some of which were sold to bring new life to other old K&T mills.

It will soon be scrapped, but hopefully not until I have a chance to remove and save some of the smaller parts from this aging derelict.

It weighs about 4,000 pounds, and is considered a baby of its type.
