Dextre Approaches RRM With Wire Cutter Tool
Image by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
NASA image captured March 8, 2011
The Dextre robot, with Wire Cutter Tool "in hand," approaches the Robotic Refueling Mission payload during March 2011 operations on the International Space Station. In the moments that followed, Dextre and the RRM tool performed the most intricate job ever attempted by a space robot, cutting two separate “lock wire” 20-thousandths of an inch (.5 millimeters) in diameter.

RRM and Dextre Achieve the Most Dexterous Space Robot Maneuver
Image by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
NASA image captured March 2012
The Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) completed the most dexterous space robot maneuver to date when the Dextre robot’s 12-foot arm used an RRM to tool successfully snip two twisted wires, each the thickness of two sheets of paper, with a mere couple of millimeters of clearance– a activity important to the satellite refueling process.
