A few nice quartz machining images I found:

The pendant is made from old sewing-machine needles and the ferrule from a discarded file. The needles came from a college fashion studies department; the ferrule from a file found on a beach near Rye in Kent.
The whole piece moves and makes a delicate tintinabulation. The points of the needles have been removed to make it safe to wear.
The chain is made from old iron wire found in a skip in glasgow and the catch features a drilled raw sapphire crystal. There is a frosted quartz set into the top of the pendant piece.
